Chain Writing with Mary Lee

It was a rainy day and I walked to the supermarket to buy some snacks. Suddenly, a light came out of the sky and it made me look shiny. All people who came out from supermarket started to stare at me. I like the attention. It made me look like I'm on a stage.

Then, suddenly, a UFO appeared. I was surprised and other people surprised, too. The UFO reached the ground in front of the supermarket. And the door of the UFO opened and there were aliens inside. They looked like rabbits and bears. Also, they looked like mice. I think their heads were like rabbits, their bodies were bears, and their arms and legs were mice. I don't really know how I should describe how they looked, but they looked pretty unique. They came in front of me, and said, "Gatigaza?". I didn't know what it meant, but they tried to take me on their UFO.

I tried to escape, but I couldn't, so I grabbed a camera from someone's pocket. The camera's owner was shouting at me. But I ignored him because I couldn't hear any shoutings. They grabbed my arms and legs and lifted me up and took me in their UFO. Inside the UFO, it was all made of crystal. It was all shining and that made me feel relaxed. But I was nervous about aliens because they were all looked like gangs. So I tried to be king to them, but they couldn't understand me. So one of the alien gave me a headphone. When I put on a headphone, I could understand what they said. It was really amazing. Because of the headphone, I could communicate with aliens because the headphone told me about aliens' language.

Aliens said that their tribe name is 'KongJiTa' and they are from Venus. I asked them why they visited the Earth, so they said there were here to take me and teach me many things. Then, an alien who looked like the head told me that there is a place that people can live. So I said, 'Let me look'. So they nodded and started to move their UFO. Really, there was a planet look just like the Earth. I took a lot of pictures and got the address of the planet. After a tour, they took me to my house and let me go. I was little bit sad about aliens.

Because of the tour with aliens, people could know about a new planet and started to live on that planet and named it,
'Alien Place'.

My Third History Presentation-Viking Women

Hello, my name is Julie and I'd like to do a presentation about viking women and what unfair life they lived. I chose this topic because it seemed most interesting to me. At first, I didn't want to do about vikings because a lot of other students did presentation about this book already. But I couldn't find more interesting topic than this one. So I chose this. Do you know about women's lives and how hard they lived? You can know about them if you listen to my presentation carefully.

First, I will explain you 10 facts about women's lives.
#1 They ran their farm when their husbands were away.
#2 Commonly, they married at 15, but they could marry at
      12, too.
#3 When they got married, they received money and they
      kept them.
#4 They could keep their surnames after marriage.
#5 They taught their daughters a lot of things such as how to
cook, milk cows, make butter, make cheese and many
other things. Also, they taught how to swim and use
weapons to prepare for the attack.
 #6 They could claim land.
#7 There were a lot of names for women and women used
      these names.
#8 They were prohibited to attack.
#9 They were not treated as equal to men in death.
#10 They combed their husband's hair.

After I read this part of the book, I wondered about one fact. According to the book named, 'Horrible Histories, Vicious Vikings', it says that commonly, women got married at the age of 12 or 15. So I wondered, 'Why did they get married at 12 or 15?', but I couldn't find the answer. So I guess that their parents let them get married at young age because they were very poor.

Next, I will explain you about women's unfair death. When the husband died, his favorite wife had to be buried with him. When they put his favorite wife, they blocked the enterance, so she can't get out of the grave. But some historians said that it maybe a Russian custom. So I tried to find information about it, but I couldn't. But I think it is not a Russian custom. However, some women chose to die with their husband. For example, there was a woman named Bergthora. One day, enemies set fire to her house to kill her husband and her sons. But they let Bergthora to escape but she didn't and died with her husband and her sons. If I was Bergthora, I would escape from my house when they let me because I want to be alive. However, I think I will be really sad and cried every day.

After I read this story, I was curious about 3 questions. First, why do women had to comb their humbands hair? I think they can do it by themselves~. There was no information about it so I guessed why women combed their husbands' hair. I think because it is the signal about thank for protecting their houses. And I think it is a old custom which they had to follow. Second, I was curious about viking clothes. Can you see the picture on the right and down? I think these pictures can solve your curiosity. Finally, were there viking women's battles? I couldn't find accurate information because some said, 'Yes' and some said, 'No'. But I think the answer will be 'No', because according to the book, they were prohibited to attack.

I found these information on google, and the book named, 'Vicious Vikings' by Terry Deary.

My Second Presentation-Scotland

Hello, my name is Julie and today, I will explain you about Scotland. First, I will ask you some questions. Do you know about Scotland? Then, do you know about Scottish foods, customs and sports? What? Me? I don't know exactly about Scotland, too. So, can you guess the reason why I chose this topic? Yes, I want to learn more about Scotland because when I saw the title of this book, I thought it will be very interesting. Lastly, can you guess what I will talk about? I will talk about Scottish foods, customs, and sports.

First, I will explain about location of Scotland. Scotland is part of the United Kingdom and it is in the island of Great Britain.

Next, I will explain about Scottish foods. Today, I will talk about 5 different kinds of foods. First, if you look at my hand-out, you can see the first picture. This food's name is Haggis and it is a kind of pudding containing sheep's pluck. Pluck mean hear, liver, and lung. It is minced with onion, oatmeal, suet, spices, and salt. Second, Porridge has been a popular breakfast for hundreds of years in Scotland. It is make by boiling oats or other cereal meals in water, milk, or both. There are 3 ways to eat Porridge. We can eat by using different plates and flavour. We can use a soup plate and a large plate and the islanders enjoyed it with a puffin for extra flavour. Third, tatties are boiled potatoes and they are like potato chips. The potatoes are boiled in the same pot as the fish, then served on a plate. Fourth, herring are forage fish. Finally, I will give an explanation about whisky. Can you see the picture of 5 different shapes of bottles? These are whisky and it is the most famous drink in Scotland. However, it could be deadly to people's health.

I think Scots ate these foods because they wanted to be strong. Also, I think if they eat those food, they could be protected by gods or something. These are my guesses but it is not accurate.

Then, I will talk about Scottish customs. The Scots have always had their customs and some of them may seem very strange to us today. I will explain 8 customs. First, to make the birth of child easier for the mother, they sprinkled the woman with pee. Second, to find out if their husbands is going to be honest or crooked, then they hit their wall with herring fat. Moreover, to bring luck to a newly married couple, their feet must be washed in oil, soot and soap with coal cinders. Fourth, to stop a corpse swelling up before it goes in its coffin, place a dish on the stomach full of salt. Furthermore, to make sure a building is blessed by the old gods, the first stone has to be covered in blood. Sixth, to make someone love you, they had to make a magic potion with a frog bone. Seventh, to cure a child's whooping cough, they fed a dog with a sandwich filed with hair. Lastly, to protect a newborn baby from evil, they had to give it a quick christening using spit.

Finally, I will talk about sports. Scotland has its own national sports. For example, there are 4 different kinds of sports which are Hurley hacket, Twisting the cow, Tossing the caber, and Hunt the Human. Do you know any sports among these? When I first heard about them, I didn't know, too so, I will explain them to you. Hurley hacket is a sport which we need a dead horse or hack. You make a sledge with it and sled down the hill. So it is also called, 'Summer Sleding'. Also, Twisting the cow is the sport that we have to twist off all four legs of the cow and Tossing the caber is the game to pick up the tree trunk and throw it as far as we can. Finally, Hunt the human is to set fire to forest and make one person die. This sport was popular with the Earl of Buchan.

After I read this story, I was really surprised about Scottish tradition because while I researching, I can see the pictures and they were amazing. The traditional Scottish costumes were strange because man was wearing skirt and woman was wearing pants.
This is the picture of Scottish costumes.

My First History Presentation-Aztecs

Hello, my name is Julie Kim, and I researched about the Aztecs. So today, I wll explain about what the Aztecs are and their lives. I choose this topic because I only have little knowledge about the Aztecs and I wanted to know about honw they live. Also, I was curious about they're lives would be similar to us.
Now, I will start my presentation.

Aztecs are centeral American Indians and they lived in an area we call Mexico today. They moved to next-door neighbors to the Maya. The Aztecs were one of the last tribes to arrive in Mexico. Before they arrived, there was Maya, Olmec, Toltec, and Colhuacan, but they disappeared except Maya, and Colhuacan. When the Aztecs first arrived, they worked as slaves for the people of colhuacan. However, they succeeded to build their new capital, Tenochtitlan which is Mexico City now. Also, they decided to elec a king to lead them. Finally, Aztec became a powerful tribe.
This is the Pyramid of Aztec.

Next, I will talk about Aztecs' lives. The Aztecs were fighters and by 1500, they had conquered most of Mexico. But they wanted to defeat warriors for their sacrifices.
This is the picture of the Aztecs.

However, there was a problem and that was "How could they defeat warriors when they'd conquered Mexico and there was no one left to beat". And the solution was to send in spies. So spies help Aztecs to defeat the enemies. The Aztec warriors captured the rebels alive and sacrificed them later.

The Aztecs believed that the gods to bring you rain or a good harvest, so they had given them gifts. They were for the gods, so it had to be pricious. The most precious gift was a life. And the most precious life was the life of child.

Also, they thought to be good parents, they should be strict. Boys were trained to be warriors and when they were baptized at a few days old they were given thier warrior equipments. Also, as boys grew older, they were told, the house is not your true home-that is out there on the battlefield.

On the other hand, girls were given a skirt, a blouse and weaving equipments. And the first words a baby heard when it was born is about sadness. Also, a child would be named after the day on which it was born.. The Aztecs were cruel to children and they even sell the kids if they were very poor. Also, if a child died, then it wouldn't get a coffin. It would be buried in a jar.

The Aztecs married  by boys choose their bride. It has to be someone of his own position in society. Then ask the girl's family if they can marry her. After asking, send his messenger to ask his teacher if he can marry. However, if the teacher says "No!", then you won't be allowed. After that, choose the wedding day, and it needs to be a 'good' day on the Aztec calender. On the wedding day, the girl's family organizes a feast at her house. After dinner, the bride is carried on the back of an old woman to the boy's house. And before wedding, everyone gives them wedding presents. Also, the Aztecs believed that the couple are married when the boy's cloak is tied to the girl's blouse. And there was a law that over the age of 30 can drink alcohol. Finally, the boys can hae many wives.

After I read this book, I thought about differences between Actec's culture and Korea's culture. The first differences that I found was about children's education. In Korea, children's parents treat them valuable, however, the Aztecs were opposite. They were cruel to children and thought to be good parents, they should be strict. Also, marriage is little bit different, too. In Actecs, boy choose their bride. But in cho-sun, Korea, boy or girl's parents choose their son's or daughter's bride or groom.
However, there are similarities, too. The Actecs gave presents to gods and Koreans gave presents to god, too. Also, in Aztec and cho-sun, girl's family prepared a feast on the wedding day.

Whild I read this story, I was very exciting because there are a lot of facts that I didn't know.
This is the map of Aztec and Maya.

Thank you for reading my presentation.

Life is valuable!!

I saw the video named, 'Spring' in the writing class. That video was about one adult monk, and one boy monk. A boy monk winded a string around a fish which was tied to a small rock and the fish died because of him. Also, he winded string around a frog but it survived. Lastly, he winded string around a snake and it died . When he saw that all animals died except the frog because of him, he had to live with a huge rock in his mind. I think this video gives us a lesson about lives, and killing.
(The man in the left picture is the man who make this video.)

I had a similar experience with him because I felt sad when flowers or other plants were picked by somebody. I felt sorry for them because they didn't do anything wrong, but they died because of people. When my friends found insects and put them in bottles or some cases, I usually stop them because I think it is very cruel. Also, I think we have to value them as lives.

However, I sometimes do that things, too. Last month, my family went to Hawaii for a family trip. We spend a week there and on the fifth day, we went to the folk village of Indians. When we arrived at the village, we ate lunch first. We ate buffet at the restaurant but it was no tasty. So we only ate water and bread. When we came out of the restaurant, we filled our water bottles. And I hold one for minutes. Then, I found an ant. So I was curious to know whether ants could swim or not. So I sprayed water on it with my younger sister. We made a pool for it and made him swim. Safely, he escaped from that pool, but we kept spray water to it until our water bottles became empty. It was really fun. However, my mom scolded us about ants. She said that ants are living creatures so we have to understand how they feel. After I heard my mother's lesson, I was really uncomfortable because I made an ant painful. Also, I promised myself about stop to play with ants.
These are the picture of Hawaii. But I didn't really took this picture, these pictures are in google.

I had same experiences like the boy monk in the video named, 'spring'. I made an ant painful with a bottle of water. Also, after I did that, I felt sorry about it and my mind was not comfortable like that boy, who cried when he saw that a fish and a snake died because of him.

So I think a lesson that this video wants to give you is about life and killing. I think the main point is that the life is very precious in this world, even if it is a small and useless thing. We have to understand their feelings and try to respect them. Also, this video explains about killing lives are bad and not right. We must kill something, when we really needed because it is the worst thing in the world.

This is the whole video of 'Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter, and Spring'.

Thank you for reading and seeing my writing~!!!
