Hello, my name is Julie and today, I will explain you about Scotland. First, I will ask you some questions. Do you know about Scotland? Then, do you know about Scottish foods, customs and sports? What? Me? I don't know exactly about Scotland, too. So, can you guess the reason why I chose this topic? Yes, I want to learn more about Scotland because when I saw the title of this book, I thought it will be very interesting. Lastly, can you guess what I will talk about? I will talk about Scottish foods, customs, and sports.
First, I will explain about location of Scotland. Scotland is part of the United Kingdom and it is in the island of Great Britain.
Next, I will explain about Scottish foods. Today, I will talk about 5 different kinds of foods. First, if you look at my hand-out, you can see the first picture. This food's name is Haggis and it is a kind of pudding containing sheep's pluck. Pluck mean hear, liver, and lung. It is minced with onion, oatmeal, suet, spices, and salt. Second, Porridge has been a popular breakfast for hundreds of years in Scotland. It is make by boiling oats or other cereal meals in water, milk, or both. There are 3 ways to eat Porridge. We can eat by using different plates and flavour. We can use a soup plate and a large plate and the islanders enjoyed it with a puffin for extra flavour. Third, tatties are boiled potatoes and they are like potato chips. The potatoes are boiled in the same pot as the fish, then served on a plate. Fourth, herring are forage fish. Finally, I will give an explanation about whisky. Can you see the picture of 5 different shapes of bottles? These are whisky and it is the most famous drink in Scotland. However, it could be deadly to people's health.
I think Scots ate these foods because they wanted to be strong. Also, I think if they eat those food, they could be protected by gods or something. These are my guesses but it is not accurate.
Then, I will talk about Scottish customs. The Scots have always had their customs and some of them may seem very strange to us today. I will explain 8 customs. First, to make the birth of child easier for the mother, they sprinkled the woman with pee. Second, to find out if their husbands is going to be honest or crooked, then they hit their wall with herring fat. Moreover, to bring luck to a newly married couple, their feet must be washed in oil, soot and soap with coal cinders. Fourth, to stop a corpse swelling up before it goes in its coffin, place a dish on the stomach full of salt. Furthermore, to make sure a building is blessed by the old gods, the first stone has to be covered in blood. Sixth, to make someone love you, they had to make a magic potion with a frog bone. Seventh, to cure a child's whooping cough, they fed a dog with a sandwich filed with hair. Lastly, to protect a newborn baby from evil, they had to give it a quick christening using spit.
Finally, I will talk about sports. Scotland has its own national sports. For example, there are 4 different kinds of sports which are Hurley hacket, Twisting the cow, Tossing the caber, and Hunt the Human. Do you know any sports among these? When I first heard about them, I didn't know, too so, I will explain them to you. Hurley hacket is a sport which we need a dead horse or hack. You make a sledge with it and sled down the hill. So it is also called, 'Summer Sleding'. Also, Twisting the cow is the sport that we have to twist off all four legs of the cow and Tossing the caber is the game to pick up the tree trunk and throw it as far as we can. Finally, Hunt the human is to set fire to forest and make one person die. This sport was popular with the Earl of Buchan.
After I read this story, I was really surprised about Scottish tradition because while I researching, I can see the pictures and they were amazing. The traditional Scottish costumes were strange because man was wearing skirt and woman was wearing pants.
This is the picture of Scottish costumes.
